Lamar County Jail Overview
Lamar County Jail, also called the Lamar County Detention Center in sheriff materials, is the only verified detention facility in Lamar County. Official sources place it at 121 Roberta Drive in Barnesville and identify the Lamar County Sheriff's Office, led by Sheriff Brad White, as the operator. It is a county jail, not a Georgia state prison, federal prison, ICE detention center, or regional jail. The Georgia Department of Corrections location page also lists Lamar County Jail as a county jail, which confirms that it is a local facility even though state-sentenced inmates can wait there before transfer.
The jail receives and processes people taken into custody by law enforcement agencies operating in Lamar County. That includes Sheriff's Office arrests, Barnesville Police Department arrests, Milner or other local arrests, warrant arrests, and people held for court action. The Sheriff's Jail Operations page says the jail was built in 1992, has 152 beds, and is staffed by 21 sworn jailers. Captain Stephanie Melton is identified as Jail Administrator, with duties that include inmate intake, housing, booking, centralized jail control, food service, medical service supervision, and jail personnel management.
The Sheriff's Jail Operations page shows the local jail operations source for capacity, staff, and custody function.
This source is the best local facility page for understanding Lamar County Jail as a working county jail rather than a state prison.
Lamar County Jail Population
Population figures for Lamar County Jail vary by source and date, so each number should be read with its source. The Sheriff's Office page gives 152 beds as the facility's own capacity statement. The Georgia Sheriffs' Association May 2026 jail report figure found in the research listed 69 inmates against 155 capacity, or 44.5 percent capacity utilization. A Sheriff-linked Georgia Criminal Alien Track and Report PDF for the 1/2/2025 to 1/2/2026 period listed 83 total current inmates and also reported detainer-related categories.
The May 2026 GSA row also separated the Lamar County Jail population into 4 state-sentenced inmates, 41 awaiting trial, 8 county-sentence inmates, and 5 in another category. Those categories show why one facility can hold people at many stages. Some are still waiting for trial. Some are serving local time. Some have received state time but have not yet moved to a Georgia Department of Corrections facility.
Who Lamar County Jail Holds
Lamar County Jail holds people arrested by local agencies, people waiting for bond or court action, county and city sentenced inmates, and state-sentenced inmates waiting for transfer. The Sheriff's Jail Operations page says people booked into the jail may post bond if the charge is bondable, or they may stay in custody until the courts dispose of the case. Male inmates serving county or city sentences may be used in county and city departments for community service.
This local custody role is different from state-prison custody. A person sentenced to state time may still appear in Lamar County Jail records while waiting for transfer. After transfer, the county jail is no longer the best search channel. Use the Georgia.gov Find an Offender route or the live GDC offender query for state-prison custody. Federal or immigration custody uses BOP, U.S. Marshals, or ICE channels, not the Lamar County Jail phone as the main locator after transfer.
| Custody stage | Where to look first | What the result means |
|---|---|---|
| New local arrest | Lamar County Jail phone or sheriff records | The person may be in booking, bond review, or housing |
| Pretrial detainee | Jail, court clerk, Magistrate, Probate, or Superior route | The court case may still be pending |
| County or city sentence | Lamar County Jail | The person may serve locally |
| State sentence awaiting transfer | Jail first, then GDC after movement | Locator changes when GDC receives the person |
| Federal or ICE custody | BOP, USMS, or ICE ODLS as applicable | Separate custody systems apply |
Look Up Lamar County Jail Inmates
The Lamar County Sheriff's Office still has public-interest navigation that points to a "Jail Population" page, but the InterOp destination currently says the website was removed per Lamar County Sheriff's Office. Because the official Sheriff-linked roster page is unavailable, a current Lamar County Jail inmate lookup depends on direct channels. Do not assume that old roster instructions, unofficial snippets, or commercial aggregator pages show the current jail population.
- Start with the person's full legal name, date of birth if known, arrest date if known, and arresting agency if known.
- Call Lamar County Jail at 770-358-5151 for current custody, bond, and next-appearance routing.
- For a written record, contact sheriff records at 770-358-5377 or general@lamarcountysheriff.com and ask about an inmate info sheet.
- Use the Sheriff's open-record form when documentation is needed, including case number, date, time, names, and location if known.
- If the person was transferred after a state sentence, search GDC instead of continuing to rely on the jail.
The official GDC page for Lamar County Jail confirms the county-jail address and phone in a state directory.
That state listing is helpful for facility confirmation, but it does not turn Lamar County Jail into a state prison or replace the county custody process.
Lamar County Jail Contact Card
Use the Roberta Drive address for jail visits, legal mail, bond questions, custody checks, and direct contact with the Detention Center. Do not use the 326 Thomaston Street courthouse address when driving to the active jail. The courthouse area matters for court records, but the jail itself is on Roberta Drive.

Lamar County Jail Visitation
Visitation at Lamar County Jail is based on the inmate's approved visitor list and the schedule posted on the Sheriff's inmate communications page. During admission, an inmate may designate up to three visitors. The Booking Officer reviews and approves those visitors. Each visit may last up to 30 minutes, but visit length can be limited so all eligible inmates have access. Two visitors are allowed for each inmate during each visitation period.
Visitors under 17 are not allowed unless they are the inmate's spouse or are accompanied by an adult. Legal counsel, ministers, and other privileged visitors are handled with the most privacy available during normal hours, though visits can be suspended or delayed during facility programs or services. Contact visits and special visits need specific approval through a written request to the Jail Administrator.

Lamar County Jail Booking and Bond
Booking at Lamar County Jail starts when the arresting agency transports the person to the Roberta Drive facility. Jail staff receive the person, identify the person, create or update jail records, review property and funds, begin medical screening, and handle visitor-designation steps during admissions. Housing assignment follows intake and classification, but official public sources do not publish pod names or housing-unit detail.
Bond depends on the charge and any hold. The Sheriff's bond page says a person charged with a bondable offense has the right to seek bond and can be released once proper surety is posted. Lamar County bond types include cash bond, property bond, professional bonding company bond, and transfer bond. The page warns that failure to appear after release normally leads to rearrest on a bench warrant with no bond. A detainer or outside-agency hold can also affect actual release.
| Bond type | Lamar County detail |
|---|---|
| Cash bond | Often used for minor traffic offenses and misdemeanor violations |
| Property bond | Must be tied to qualifying tangible real estate in Lamar County |
| Professional bond | Licensed company registered with the Sheriff's Office may post for a fee |
| Transfer bond | Bond made from another county sheriff's office, subject to Lamar acceptance rules |
Lamar County Jail Services
Official inmate support materials list food service, medical care, religious services, phone access, scanned mail, tablets, commissary, and money handling. Meals are served three times daily and are prepared, transported, and served under conditions approved by the County Health Department. Medical services are provided by medically trained personnel under the authority and direction of a licensed physician. Medications must be prescribed or approved by the licensed facility physician.
Religious services are conducted daily so each inmate has an opportunity to attend no less than twice weekly. The Sheriff's Jail Operations page also says male inmates serving county or city sentences may be used in county and city departments for community service. These are local jail services. Broader Georgia Department of Corrections education, reentry, and state-prison programming applies only after a Lamar County defendant transfers to GDC custody.
Note: Confirm custody, approved visitors, mail format, and deposit rules with Lamar County Jail before traveling or sending funds.
Lamar County Jail Visitor Planning
Use 121 Roberta Drive, Barnesville, GA 30204 for maps, bond visits, legal mail, and inmate visitation. The Superior/Juvenile Clerk and Probate Court are at 326 Thomaston Street, which is relevant for court records but not the active jail entrance. Official sources do not publish visitor parking rates, a visitor-parking map, a public transit route, or an ADA entrance note. Call the jail at 770-358-5151 before leaving if parking, entry screening, accessibility, or visit approval affects the trip.
From central Barnesville, route toward Roberta Drive and follow Sheriff's Office or Detention Center signs. From U.S. 341 and other west-central Georgia routes, use the exact Roberta Drive address. From I-75 or eastern approaches through Forsyth and Monroe County, expect a rural highway approach into Barnesville. Allow extra time for check-in because the visitor list and the posted visitation windows control access.
